How Scleroderma Affects Sexuality
If you or your partner have recently been diagnosed with scleroderma, you may be concerned that the disease will impact intimacy.
MORE:Â How serious is scleroderma?
According to the Scleroderma Foundation, the effect scleroderma has on a person’s sex life can vary greatly from patient to patient. Many may not notice any significant change in their sex drive or suffer any pain when being intimate with their partner. Others may experience pain or stiffness which may hinder intimacy. Common symptoms of the disease such as shrunken mouths and finger deformities may present problems when it comes to kissing and touching.
Fatigue can play a major part in diminishing sex lives, and many scleroderma patients will suffer from fatigue either as a result of the disease or due to the medications they take.
The Scleroderma Foundation’s downloadable pamphlet offers helpful advice on how to overcome obstacles and suggests ways to help patients relax prior to sex.
