How to Manage Scleroderma-Related Fatigue

Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune disease where the body suddenly starts to produce too much collagen. This excess collagen can cause thickening of the skin and also fibrosis of internal organs. In addition to issues associated with collagen, many scleroderma patients will also experience extreme fatigue.

Fatigue is much more than just feeling tired, it can creep up slowly over time and become very debilitating. Even doing simple chores can leave you feeling weak and physically exhausted. According to Hopkins Scleroderma, there is no real way to treat fatigue but there are ways that you can manage the condition.

Conserving energy is the best way to manage fatigue. Know your limits and only do what you need to do, and don’t be afraid to ask friends and family for help if needed. Get plenty of rest and if you need to take a nap, then do so. Although it sounds counterproductive, a little exercise can actually make you feel more energetic, so a gentle walk or some yoga each day may help.

Eating correctly will also help with energy levels. Follow a nutritious diet, full of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean protein. Drink plenty of water so you don’t become dehydrated.
